We are seeing a dramatic change in the behaviour of the remaining members of the Tribe over the past few weeks, as their numbers have shrunk.  In an odd sort of way, there appears to be a sort of melding between past and present cats …

For quite a while now, Mustrum, Iggy and Lilith have lived pretty much in the study, leaving Aliss the run of downstairs. The only time they met would be in the kitchen when it was food time (which is, of course, pretty much any time).

Last night, when all trace of Aliss had gone – she’d been buried under a tree in the garden, and her box had been emptied and the contents washed – we got home late after a gig, and all three cats came and joined us in the bedroom.  I cannot remember when last this happened.

Lilith climbed under the covers – I don’t think she’s ever done that before.  When she emerged, Iggy went under the duvet – I *know* he’s never done that before.  But Bada used to sleep under the duvet all the time in cold weather.

Iggy has taken to sleeping on our pillows.  Zool did that, and so did Aliss occasionally, and so did Pteppic.  But Iggy has never done it.  Mustrum now tends to perch on me when I first go to bed.  Aliss did that when she was little.

Lilith has started sleeping in exactly the same positions and places as Bada did, to the point where once or twice I’ve actually thought it was Bada.

It’s all very odd, and quite comforting in a way, as though the memories of the cats who have left us are  entwined with the cats who are still living with us.
